Gilbert Gabriel is a composer, pianist and audiovisual artist whose eclectic musical language stems from studies at Dartington College of Arts, Goldsmiths, University of London and Berklee College of Music.
Prior to forming The Dream Academy, he played in several London bands spanning jazz, soul and electronic music, including playing Fender Rhodes in a jazz collective with alto saxophonist James Dalton, a collaborator of Linton Kwesi Johnson, at the legendary Covent Garden Africa Centre where Soul II Soul were to later manifest.
In Dreamadelica, Gilbert explores contemporary jazz and electronic performance, informed by the atmospheric Bristol sound of LTJ Bukem whose use of Fender Rhodes and vintage jazz samples influence neo-jazz. Dreamadelica features live keyboards, flute, electric guitar with fluid electronic grooves and cinematic textures.
His work with The Dream Academy later received international recognition including an Ivor Novello Award nomination.
